Amanda Michel is Director of HuffPost’s OffTheBus. Amanda started in politics during the 2003-2004 campaign cycle, working as the National Director of Generation Dean and then creating and managing the MediaCorps program for the Kerry-Edwards campaign. Along with several other Kerry-Edwards coworkers she helped co-found the New Organizing Institute in the wake of the 2004 election. Since then she’s taken her online organizing skills to media, working at Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society and on Assignment Zero, a Wired and NewAssignment.net collaboration. She is also a Knight Digital Media Fellow.

The content industry has convinced industry in general that extremism in copyright regulation is good for business and economic growth. In this talk, Professor Lessig describes the creative and profitable future that culture and industry could realize, if only we gave up IP extremism.

Below is video of last week’s public hearing on the proposal to webcast NYC City Council and other municipal meetings. It was informative with first, representatives of the NYC Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) giving the official line, and then, two presentations by commercial vendors. After which Common Cause, the Peoples Production House, and others spoke on behalf of the public interest.

Jonathan Zittrain will debate the premise of his book ‘The Future of the Internet - and How to Stop It.’ on Thursday Nov 6 - 3.30pm-5pm - at the New America Foundation in Washington DC.

The debate will be webcast live.

Tech Committee Holds Webcasting Hearing - Council Plans to Expand Digital Live and VOD

City Hall - On Wednesday, October 29, 2008, Council Member Gale A. Brewer (D-Manhattan), Chair of the Technology in Government Committee, will hold a hearing regarding Introduction 533-A which amends the City Charter to require that all public meetings be webcast.

The Council Technology in Government Committee will hold the hearing regarding webcasting on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 10 AM in the 14th Floor Hearing Room of 250 Broadway, New York. This is a public meeting and all are welcome to attend. Photo id required.

The NYC Council Tech Committee recently held a public hearing after the Broadway and TV industries lobbied for a resolution urging the FCC to withhold approval of White Space Devices (WSDs) for broadband access - the concern being that they would interfere with wireless microphones and DTV transmissions
